Do you spend more time seated in your office chair every day
or on your carefully selected easy chair in your living
room? If you're like most office workers, your office chair
gets the most attention. However, this chair serves a
different function than your lounging chair and should
follow some pointers to make sure its best fitted for you.
A few general principles to follow when picking the right
office chair are along these lines:
1.~Proper back support. An angle of 90 to 105 degrees
is best suited to support your back.
2.~Chair height. Your feet should comfortably rest on
the floor.
3.~Lap position. Make sure your thighs are parallel to
the floor for free flowing support.
4.~Tilting. Let your chair have some title but not so
much you could touch the floor backwards.
Back support should be your top priority when selecting an
office chair. A contoured backrest with a natural shape
that conforms to your body's size and structure has the best
support. A handy feature is an adjustable back support for
various heights and sitters throughout the day.
Avoid the idea of a soft seat on your office chair.
Remember that you will be sitting upright for hours and
not lounging like you were watching television. An office
chair needs to support your body evenly so that you do not
develop muscle fatigue during the day. Ideally, the seat
cushion should be sculpted rather than flat so that it
supports the thighs as well as the buttocks. Look for a
waterfall style seat as well. This style of seat cushion
slopes forward so that you get improved circulation to your
legs during the day.
Another important feature is the chair's controls for
adjustability. These controls should be easy for the sitter
to reach and operate smoothly up and down or forward and
backward. Since many office chair users shift to surfaces
at different heights throughout the day, such as from a long
desk to a computer station, this feature is essential to
their level of comfort.
Casters make the movement from one spot to another much
smoother and easier. Five casters are found on the newer
models; whereas older office chairs have only four. The
increase in radial legs from four to five provides more
stability and safety.
Who hasn't sat all day and experienced some toll on one's
back. The right office chair can relieve a lot of this
strain. Other measures to take to improve your back are to
break away from sitting for about two minutes every 30
minutes or to stretch and shift positions frequently. This
is necessary to maintain a strong and correct posture.
Another factor that can affect your sitting position and
comfort level is your glass' prescription. The wrong
prescription tends to force you to make improper adjustments
in how you tilt your head or lean into a computer screen.
